ICAN-USA is one of the Four Diaspora District Societies of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Fellows of The Institute:
Associate members of the Institute who have been in continuous practice on their own account for five years or those who are not in practice as an Associate of the Institute for a period of ten years are eligible to apply for transfer to Fellowship of the Institute.

Associate Members:
Members who have passed the examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria or have fulfilled a prescribed requirement as laid down by the Institute and have been admitted to membership.

Affiliate Members:
Members of any professional accountancy body recognized by ICAN. Affiliate Membership will be valid from the date of admission to the conclusion of either the next 2 consecutive induction programs held by ICAN in Nigeria or the next induction program held by the US District Society, whichever is later.

Student Members:
Student Membership of any professional accountancy body recognized by ICAN and the Student is ordinarily resident in the United States.

ICAN

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) was established by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1965 to:

  1. Determine what standards of knowledge and skill are to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the accountancy profession and to raise those standards from time to time as circumstances may permit;
  2. Secure in accordance with the provision of the Act, the establishment and maintenance of the registers of fellows, associates and registered accountants entitled to practice as accountants and auditors and to publish from time to time a list of those persons;
  3. Perform, through the Council of the Institute, all other functions conferred on it by the Act.
    As the foremost professional accounting body in the West African sub-region, in 1982, ICAN initiated and contributed significantly to the formation of the Association of Accounting Bodies in West Africa (ABWA).

    In fulfilling its mission, the Institute has over the years certified 38,000 Chartered Accountants who are engaged in value creation in various sectors of the economy. Apart from being in professional practice, ICAN members are engaged in the three tiers of public service as well as the private sector.

ICAN-USA District Society was established under the laws of the United States in 2008 as a 501(c)(6) organization by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), the foremost Accounting professional body in Africa. ICAN is chartered by an Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1965 to regulate the Practice of Accountancy in Nigeria and has about thirty-eight thousand registered members’ resident all over the world. ICAN is also a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
